The Situation
JRWrestling, which is no longer a client, at the time of our business relationship, had been an established and recognized e-commerce website selling wrestling gear and equipment online. Offering an extensive product list and competitive pricing, JRWrestling acknowledged that it needed more out of its SEO in order to reach its full potential.
The Challenge
The site had been working with another SEO service company, but they recognized that a change was necessary – and fast – as wrestling season was rapidly approaching and peak sales would begin in two months. Most of the targeted phrases being used were already achieving page 2 results on Google. Something else was needed to make the difference.
The Approach
The web pages themselves required only minimal changes in order to enhance the search engine rankings. Therefore, we had to discover exactly what other parts of the overall SEO effort needed attention, beyond small changes to the web pages, and implement those identified improvements in a positive way.
The first step was to perform a comparison study with the online competition in order to discover how they were different. The primary distinction was that virtually all of the competitors also featured a strong “off-site” presence.
Off-site was clearly the key. We created a strategy to dramatically increase the number of incoming links to JRWrestling without swamping the internet all at once, triggering the search engine “spam” filters that would lead to a penalty. The strategy incorporated several different forms of linking opportunities, using as many unique websites as possible in order to provide significant growth in a pattern that appeared natural.
The Results
Within the two-month span before the peak wrestling sales season was to begin, Baldy Dog was able to draw all 20 of the JRWrestling keyword phrases up to Google’s first page search results from their former page 2 position.
- Half of the JRWrestling keyword phrases scored within the top 5 Google results positions.
- Before strategy was implemented, the site was achieving little more than 2100 visitors every week. After Baldy Dog’s campaign was complete, that statistic grew to more than 6800 per week – a growth of over 300 percent.
- Sales grew from approximately $500 per week to over $5000 per week – a growth factor of more than ten times.
